This will be my 1st series of blog, I called it Monolog. A combination of monochrome photos (specifically black and white photos) with my monologue. It could be a form of diary, documetation, random thaught, or self reflection. I’m not entirely sure, but will see how it goes.
Lately I felt creatively stuck. So trying this approach to squeeze more or produce more creative juice. The reason to shot in black and white is because my camera have a fantastic built-in monochrome preset. I’m using this preset to reduce the friction in publishing my photo, aka “lazy to edit”. I’ll still do some necessary dodge and burn in overexposed or underexposed photo.
The real switch from colour to black and white is at June of 2026. But I only started to review those photos in early September due to procrastination.😅
Taking black and white photo is a challenge to me. It’s not as simple as reduce the saturation of a colour photo to zero. As all the colour information is reduced, it feels different if I pointed my camera to bright and saturated coloured subjects. Need some time to adjust how my eyes see the world. Luckily I’m using a digital camera with black and white preview, it help to previsualize how’s the photo look in black and white. Texture, geometry, strong light or strong shadow really stand out.
Since late July, getting more busy at my job. Meaning less time to headout take photo. If look in a pessimistic way, meaning less chance of taking a good photo. I’ll just try to sneak out whenever I got the chance, slowly accumulate my works, slowly to learn how to see in black and white.
On the bright side, I still manage to squeeze time to join George Town Festival during August. I really enjoy taking photos of parade or busy scene, it really make me to focus on the moment, temporary forgot about my job and my boss. Fun crowd and fun scene, I forgot about any rule and composing idea I noted down for black and white photo, just press the shutter and trust my instinct. Which is how I do for most of the time. Just to have fun. This is my 3rd time attending George Town Festival, not all the activities are the best, but I enjoy most of it.
